This passive VGA Balun pair allows for a VGA video signal to be transmitted via 4-pair shielded Cat 5 twisted pair cable. The shielded Cat 5 is only required if you are going to connect a laptop. If you have installed or are going to use non-shielded Cat 5, then consider the
Products 500040 and either of the 500041 or 500042. The maximum distances are: 450 ft. for 640x480 pixels (15MHz); 350 ft. for 800x600 pixels (30MHz); 250 ft. 1024x768 pixels (60MHz); 200 ft. for 1280x1074 pixels (100MHz).
Pictured here are the VGA Balun part numbers 500010 and 500011 - these two connector configurations are used depending on whether the balun is connected to the VGA source or to a VGA destination. The male HD15 on the 500010 has a 6" lead.
It's a more cost-effective and versatile cabling solution than costly and bulky VGA cable.
Applications: Typical applications include classroom video distribution, overhead projector systems, PC-training systems, and tradeshow demo systems.
In the boardroom or classroom you can easily connect the VGA balun to the laptops of different presenters and save time, instead of playing musical chairs with every presenter getting up and moving closer to the projector.
The VGA Balun transmits RGB video, horizontal and vertical synchronization pulses and works in conjunction with PC, VGA splitters, VGA signal extenders, laptops, and VGA monitors and LCD projector screens.
Note: If you are connecting a laptop to the VGA Balun you will need to use shielded CAT5 with shielded RJ45 connectors. The shield is required to properly ground the VGA signal whenever the equipment does not have a built-in 3-prong power plug. The following are the Cat 5 pairs: 1 & 2; 3 & 6; 4 & 5; 7 & 8.
It is recommended that you use shielded cable from
balun to balun. This means the patch panels, if any, and patch cords must be shielded. Each STP cable must be terminated with shielded RJ45 plugs on both ends, with the drain wire terminated on the shield of each RJ45. In this
case it might be a suggestion to eliminate the patch panels if possible to simplify the cabling.
The reason that shielded twisted pair is required is because the video sync pulses are unbalanced and therefore the shield is needed to ensure that they are transmitted properly. Unshielded twisted pair may work, but there is a strong possibility that it will not. The criteria for whether unshielded twisted pair works is whether there is perfect ground continuity between the signal ground of the transmit balun and the signal ground of the receive balun. This depends on the actual equipment used.
It is recommended to keep the resolution set to 1024x768 or lower for best performance.
Interference from lights or other electrical cables will not be a problem, however wiring should be kept away from flourescent lighting ballasts and power cable as specified in the EIA/TIA cabling standards.
The VGA Balun is used in pairs - both part numbers 500010 and 500011 are required so
